Gynaecomastia Surgery – Everything you need to know

gynaecomastiaGynaecomastia (also referred to as “man boobs”), is a common condition that causes a man’s breasts to swell and become larger than normal. It can affect one or both breasts and most commonly occurs in teenage boys and older men.

Gynaecomastia can vary from a small amount of excess tissue around the nipples to more prominent breasts. These fatty deposits can cause anything from a tender lump under the nipple to larger woman like breasts and is often resistant to diet and exercise.

In the vast majority of cases the cause is not known, however gynaecomastia can usually be attributed to normal hormone fluctuations during different stages in life, the taking of some medications, weight gain, puberty and older age. Rarely, it can be associated with other diseases that cause abnormal hormone levels.

Male gynaecomastia can only be removed surgically and is tailored for each individual patient. In some cases, excess fatty tissue can be removed with liposuction only. More commonly liposuction is combined with surgical excision of the excess breast tissue. Whatever the technique, the goal should always be to minimise scars and create flatter, more masculine shaped chest contour. The tissue removed during surgery should also always be sent for analysis to confirm the diagnosis.

How long does male breast reduction surgery take?

Male breast reduction in most cases takes approximately one hour under a general anaesthetic in an accredited hospital. It is done as a day only procedure so you do not need to stay overnight in a hospital.

What is the recovery process?

Generally, you can return to work and your normal activities within 2-3 days. More exertional chest activities such as lifting weights at a gym must wait 2 weeks. Dr Ho will place you in a support garment for a minimum of 2 weeks. Whilst you will see an immediate result from the surgery, once the swelling settles at around 6 weeks you will see the final results.

How much does male gynaecomastia surgery cost?

The initial consultation is $275.00. Each subsequent consultation is at no charge. Medicare and private health fund rebates are often payable for this surgery.

The total cost of the surgery (Dr Kevin Ho, Anaesthetist, hospital fees and garments) and any rebates you may be entitled to will be calculated after your initial consultation with Dr Kevin Ho. Typically the total out of pocket costs for surgery start at $5,000.00.

It is advisable to bring a referral from your GP as in most cases are entitled to a Medicare and Private Health Fund rebate.
