Patient care: What questions should I be asking my Plastic Surgeon?

body

The decision to have plastic surgery is not a light one, so it’s always important that you not only do your research, but thoroughly question your plastic surgeon to ensure you gain a thorough understanding of not only your procedure, but also the risks and costs associated with it.

It’s also a great way to determine if your plastic surgeon is well equipped to handle the procedure. A trustworthy plastic surgeon will have no problem in answering your questions honestly. Here are some of the questions you should be asking your plastic surgeon:

Qualifications & Experience Questions

Q What are your qualifications and experience? Are you a member of ASPS and have a Fellowship with the Royal Australia College of Surgeons?

To ensure that your plastic surgeon is actually a ‘plastic surgeon’ and not a cosmetic surgeon, it’s important to ask them for proof of a qualification as a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS-Plastic Surgery) and their membership with ASPS. There is a difference between a cosmetic and a plastic surgeon, so it’s important to be clear on that difference.

Q How many times have you performed this procedure?

Q How many times have you performed this procedure in the last six months?

Q Can I speak to another patient in your clinic?

Surgery Complications & Risks Questions

Q What are the complications associated with this surgery?

Q If a complication does occur, how will you deal with this?

Q Are there any side-effects from this surgery?

Procedure Questions

Q What aftercare is provided by your rooms and is this included in the treatment costs?

Q Is my procedure being performed in an accredited hospital under a general anaesthetic?

Q Will there be a specialist Anaesthetist present throughout my whole operation?
