Vitamin B12 injections- is it worth the shot?

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is a water soluble vitamin. It is an important vitamin because it is essential for normal functioning of the brain, nervous system and red blood cells.

Vitamin B12 is known for its near magic effects in boosting metabolism, because it is involved in the conversion of fats and carbohydrates into energy units. This is why patients report feeling energized after refilling their B12 stores.

Many people don’t understand why they are deficient if they eat enough B12. A huge part of the problem as we age is due to lack of absorption. Other contributing factors such as toxins in the environment, cigarette smoking, vegan diet, can all play a part in depleting our B12 stores.

Food or oral B12 supplements often don’t work because the issue is often an absorption problem, the body cannot release enough B12 from the stomach into the bloodstream. That is why B12 injections let you ‘skip’ the absorption issues and allows the B12 directly into the bloodstream.

Are there any side effects?

Medicines usually have lots of side effects, but this is not a medicine. It’s a nutritional supplement, so side effects are much less likely to appear. Even though these injections are very safe, some rare side effects have been reported, such as: mild diarrhea, nausea, headaches, mild breathlessness, discomfort at the injection site, light joint pain, red skin, tingling and palpitations.

What is the dosage?

Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. We recommend that you do a course of 3 injections, one month apart.

How is the dosage delivered?

The injection is delivered into the muscle, usually the arm, for easy absorption into the bloodstream.

What do I need to do to prepare?

Before getting the shot you must advise us of any allergies, nutritional supplements or if you have consumed large amounts of alcohol in the last 24 hours.
