Face lift, also known as meloplasty is a rejuvenation procedure of the face that addresses aged cheeks and jowls. This is often reflected by sallow cheeks and heavy jowls with a loss of jaw and neck definition. It is a procedure that can be performed in conjunction with other facial procedures to achieve harmony and restore a youthful, healthy appearance.
There are many types of face lift in the literature. Essentially they fall into short scar (hidden around the ear) and traditional longer incision techniques that extend to the hairline above and behind the ear. Which incision technique generally depends on the amount of excess skin that requires removal.
More important however is how the underlying structures to the skin are addressed as this gives the result and longevity to the facelift. The deeper structures and SMAS (Superficial Musculo Aponeurotic System) muscle layers are repositioned through various techniques (rather than tightened) to where they were in youth. This repositioning may take the form of suture techniques like MACS (minimal access cranial suspension) lift, removal of excess tissue or even the placement of fat in youthful sites.
Fat grafting is a powerful regenerative technique that involves the removal of fat from unwanted areas and its placement in favourable, youthful sites. This fat not only has its own growth factors and stem cells that rejuvenate the surrounding tissues and skin but it can also be used to fill hollows around the eyes and cheeks that develop with aging.
Once this foundation is established, excess skin is removed such that there is no tension on your incisions – thus the incisions heal well and the result is not dependent on skin tightening which gives an unnatural ‘operated on’ appearance not to mention a result that disappears once the skin stretches. This comprehensive approach avoids the tell-tale signs of having undergone a face lift such as widened, visible scars, and distortion to the ear and hairline.
My philosophy in face lift is to address the components of your anatomy to restore them to where they were in youth. This retains your identity and features whilst giving a natural, youthful result that lasts. Please refer to our facelift informational post, should you require further information.
